Privacy Policy
Effective date:
Drift New Tab is a personal dashboard Chrome extension. Your dashboard is stored in your browser, not in a Drift account. This policy explains what stays on your device and what is sent when you use connected services.
1. Your data stays in your browser
Dashboard layouts, widget positions and sizes, widget settings, notes, drawings, shortcuts and shortcut groups, background choices and preferences are stored locally in your browser. The extension uses Chrome’s local extension storage (chrome.storage.local), with a localStorage backup or fallback. The web dashboard uses localStorage. Weather readings may also be cached locally.
Notes and dashboard content are not transmitted to Drift’s developer. Drift does not provide a cloud account or upload your saved dashboard. If you choose to export a setup, the share code is generated locally. Anyone you choose to share that code with can read the content it includes, including notes; share it only with people you trust.
2. Weather and market-data requests
Connected widgets send only the information needed to return the data you request. In the Chrome extension, these requests go directly to the providers over HTTPS, not through Drift’s developer.
- Weather — Open-Meteo: a city name you enter may be sent to geocoding-api.open-meteo.com to find its coordinates. Selected latitude, longitude and temperature unit are sent to api.open-meteo.com to return weather data. This is the location configured for your weather widget, not collection of your browsing history.
- Stocks and ticker search — Yahoo Finance: selected stock symbols, cryptocurrency ticker pairs, or company/coin names and symbols entered into search may be sent to query1.finance.yahoo.com or query2.finance.yahoo.com to return requested prices and matching tickers.
- Cryptocurrency fallback providers — CoinGecko, Coinbase and Binance: if a price is unavailable from an earlier provider, Drift may send the selected coin ID to api.coingecko.com, its currency pair to api.coinbase.com, or its trading pair to api.binance.com to return the requested price and price change. These are fallback requests, not transfers of your notes or dashboard.
Like other websites you contact, these providers can receive standard connection information, such as your IP address and request headers, and handle it under their own privacy policies.
3. Other external services and content
- Website icons — Google: Drift requests favicon images from www.google.com/s2/favicons using a shortcut or website’s domain. This sends that domain to Google, not your browsing history or notes.
- Web search — Google, DuckDuckGo or Bing: submitting a search opens the selected search engine with your search text. The search engine’s privacy policy applies.
- Background images — Lovable-hosted assets: the extension loads library images from drift-new-tab.lovable.app. This requests an image, not an upload of your dashboard. A custom image URL contacts the host you select.
- RSS feeds: a news widget contacts the feed URL you configure to retrieve its headlines.
- Embedded websites, pasted HTML and external links: a Website widget may contact its selected URL to check whether embedding is allowed, and load the site in a frame. Pasted HTML may load external resources it references. Opening a shortcut or external link contacts that site.
Embedded websites, external links, feeds, search engines and image hosts are governed by their own privacy policies. They may receive connection information or set their own cookies where the browser permits. Drift’s local-storage protection does not control data you enter directly into a third-party website.
4. What Drift does not collect or do
Drift does not collect names, email addresses, authentication details, payment information or browsing history. The extension does not scan your browsing activity. Text you voluntarily type into a note stays local, even if it contains personal information.
Drift does not sell user data, use it for advertising, or allow humans to read private user content. There is no developer-accessible store of your private dashboard content. Provider requests described above are for the features you use, not advertising or profiling by Drift.
5. Deleting your locally stored data
Use Reset Everything in Drift’s settings and confirm the prompt to remove your saved layout, widgets, notes, drawings, shortcuts, groups, background choices and preferences and restore the default dashboard. Reset affects Drift’s saved dashboard, not other websites’ data.
Reset Everything does not currently clear the separate local weather-reading cache. Uninstalling the Chrome extension removes its browser-managed extension storage. For the web dashboard, clear the site’s browser data to remove localStorage and caches. Exported files or share codes you saved or sent elsewhere must be deleted separately; neither reset nor uninstall can recall copies you shared or delete data held by third-party services.
6. Chrome Web Store Limited Use disclosure
Drift’s use of information received from Chrome APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide or improve Drift’s user-facing features. It is not sold, used for advertising, or made available for humans to read private user content.
